Every experience you have ever had was made inside you, through Thought, in the moment you had it.
The tree you see. The help you felt in a therapist’s room. The certainty you held five years ago. The feeling that came over you when the email arrived. The thought that kept you up last night. All of it, without exception, made in one place.
If that sounds like a large claim, it is. It is also the plainest description of how a human being works that I know, and these six essays look at it from six directions, each one starting where people usually stop.
If you have tried to understand this before and it kept slipping, nothing is wrong with you. It slips because almost everything we are taught about the inner life assumes the opposite.
The fact, in plain words
There are two things worth keeping apart before anything else.
The Physical is the world of matter. Trees, air, light, bodies, traffic. It is really there, it is shared, and it does what it does whatever anyone thinks about it.
Reality is everything you actually live: the tree as you see it, the voice as you hear it, the mood, the meaning, the person across the table. That is made inside you, through Thought, moment by moment.
Between the two, very little crosses. Light reaches the eye. Pressure reaches the ear. That is the whole delivery. Everything you have ever recognised, felt or understood was made after that, in you.
When this is seen, people call it the inside-out understanding. The everyday assumption, that circumstances make you feel things, is the outside-in one. I’ve laid out both of them side by side on a page of their own.
Nothing has ever come in but light and pressure.
Everything you have ever lived was made here.
The six essays
They ran through the autumn of 2026. Each one stands on its own, and each one takes the fact somewhere it is usually assumed not to reach.
1. The Tree Never Sent You a Tree
The strongest objection to all of this is the tree everyone can see. Surely something is coming in. Something is: colour and brightness, and nothing else. No cell in the eye picks up a tree, and no one has ever heard a pressure wave. What is shared is exactly the part nobody has ever experienced, and what is experienced was never shared.
Read this if you follow the inside-out idea right up to the point where the world seems obviously out there, and then it folds back into common sense.
2. Insight Is Not a Reward for Feeling Good
“When I’m in a better place, it’ll land.” Look at your own history and the rule falls apart: real insights arrived at every point on the feeling scale, some at the very bottom. Feeling and insight sit on different axes. Up has a thousand steps. In has none, and it is as close from the worst moment as from the best.
Read this if you believe you have to get calmer, quieter or happier before you can see anything.
3. What Your Therapist Never Delivered
A helper can send pressure waves and light, and nothing more. Yet you were helped, fully. So the understanding, the care and the clarity were made on your side of the room, out of your own depth, and they are still there. That is not a reason to stop going. It is the end of needing to.
Read this if you have ever been helped by a therapist, coach or friend, or you help people for a living.
“Sometimes my feelings come from Thought, and sometimes from what happens to me.” Halfway inside does not bring you halfway to peace. Any exception leaves the outside-in view a door, and the exceptions always land on the hard feelings. Peace with exceptions is peace on conditions. And you were never forty percent of the way there. You were always one thought from all of it.
Read this if you think of yourself as “mostly inside-out” or “a work in progress”.
5. The Person You Were Lived Somewhere Else
“How could I have been so stupid?” The person you were five years ago lived in a whole other reality, made of Thought, where staying made sense. The one you have now didn’t improve the old one. It replaced it. Not higher, just next. These are vertical separate realities, an extra layer under the separate worlds two people live in.
Read this if you are still arguing with, or ashamed of, someone you used to be.
6. Your Thinking Has No Full Stop
Overthinking is thinking that has lost its full stop. The full stop is the quiet underneath every thought, and it is automatically there whenever it is seen that experience is coming from Thought. Without it, every thought is built out of the last one, and changing the content only feeds the chain. No thought can produce the full stop, including the thought “I must stop thinking”.
Read this if your mind keeps going round the same thing, and no technique has ended it.
What all six point at
Each essay starts somewhere different: a tree, a bad week, a therapist’s room, the word “sometimes”, an old self, a racing mind. Each one ends in the same place.
Every one of them points at the same place, and it is the place you are reading from.
That is the part I find most astonishing. The place every experience is made is also where wisdom is. The insight you were waiting to feel better for, the help you thought lived in someone else, the quiet that ends a thought: all of it in you, already, waiting to be found. Nothing has to arrive from anywhere. Nothing has to be earned first.
The world of matter stays exactly where it is. What changes is where you look for the things that matter most, and that one change tends to rearrange a great deal.
Questions people ask
Where do feelings come from?
From Thought, in the moment they are felt. Circumstances are real and they are in the Physical, but no circumstance has ever reached inside and made a feeling. The Three Principles describe how that works.
Is perception reality?
Perception is already the finished product. The eye delivers colour and brightness, the ear delivers pressure, and the tree, the voice and the meaning are made after that, inside you. So the reality you live in is made in you. The world of matter is something else, and it is shared.
Does this mean the world isn’t real?
No. The Physical is real, and you should still look both ways before crossing the road. What has no outside is your experience of the world.
If insight comes from inside, why do teachers and therapists help?
They are real occasions, and some of them change lives. What they send is words, which arrive as pressure and light. The help itself is made in the person being helped, every time.
Can I be partly inside-out?
In any moment, experience is either seen as coming from Thought or it looks as if it comes from something else. There is no blend of the two. The outside-in view sounding inward is its own trap, which I wrote about in The Third Position.
Why can’t I stop overthinking?
Because no thought can end the chain. What ends it is the quiet underneath thinking, which is there whenever the source of the thinking is seen.
Is this the same as positive thinking or the Law of Attraction?
No. Neither changing your thoughts nor directing them at circumstances touches how experience is made. This is a description of what is already happening, in everyone, not a method. Feel free to read the article The Vision Board Faces Out which explains why the Law of Attraction is not the same as the Inside-Out paradigm.

Much of this series came to me through Brett Chitty’s whiteboards, and he credits Keith and Valda Blevens-Monroe for the ground beneath it. The writing, and any mistakes in it, are mine. Whatever you saw here, you saw.
If you want the whole thing in one place. Reality Is an Inside Job lays out the inside-out fact from start to finish, in plain words, with nothing to practice. Paperback, ebook and audiobook. Its small, free companion, The Gifts of Separate Realities, looks at what that fact changes in an ordinary life.
Quick note: RealityOS is the book’s companion, running inside Claude, for the moments you want to see this in your own situation. It is part of the paid subscription, here.
