The Law of Attraction makes a simple promise. Your thoughts create your reality. Get clear on what you want, feel as though you already have it, and it will come to you.
Maybe you tried it. A vision board, a list written in the present tense, a few minutes every night picturing the house, the relationship, the number in the account.
And maybe it didn’t come.
Then there is the question almost everyone asks afterwards, quietly, on their own: Did I not believe it enough?
Nothing was wrong with your believing. The problem is where the Law of Attraction told you to look.
What it gets right
Start with the part that is true, because it is true without exception.
Your reality is created by thought. All of it. Every moment you have ever lived came to you through Thought, and not one of them came any other way.
The Law of Attraction deserves real credit for saying that to millions of people. The trouble starts with what it means by two words: reality, and create.
Which reality
When the Law of Attraction says reality, it means the house, the money, the partner, the healed body. Things.
Things are made of atoms, and atoms don’t take instructions from your thinking. The house is there or not there whether you picture it or not.
But there is a second thing we also call reality, and it is the one thought actually makes. Your experience. The relief of walking into the house. The pride, the ease, the finally. The whole felt life you are living, moment by moment.
These are two different things. One is the Physical: matter, the world of atoms. The other is Reality with a capital R: everything you experience. And Reality isn’t made of atoms. It is made of Thought.
So the Law of Attraction takes the one power you really have and aims it at the one thing it doesn’t touch. Meanwhile the thing Thought makes completely, your entire experience, it treats as a side effect that will follow once the atoms have been arranged.
When
The second mistake is about time.
The Law of Attraction says manifesting takes a while. You hold the image, keep the feeling up, wait, and at some point the universe delivers.
Thought doesn’t work with a delay. The only moment it has ever worked is now. A thought comes, and in the same instant it is experience: seen, felt, real to you. There is no queue and no waiting period. Nothing is being processed somewhere for later delivery.
Which means nothing needs to be manifested. Everything you think is already manifested, the moment you think it.
Now look at the evening with the vision board again. You sit with a picture of the house you don’t have. And in that moment Thought does exactly what it always does. Instantly, and perfectly, it gives you the experience of wanting a house you don’t have.
The law was working the whole time.
It was just working here and now, not out there and later.
The wrong direction
That is the whole misunderstanding.
The Law of Attraction looks out and forward. Thought only ever works in and now.
Think about what you actually wanted. Not the house itself. You wanted how you believed you would feel in the house. Safe. Arrived. Allowed to rest.
That feeling was never going to come out of the walls. On the day you get the keys, it will be made the way every feeling is made: by Thought, in you, in that moment. The walls can’t supply it, because feelings aren’t stored in walls.
Even the one inward instruction the Law of Attraction gives, feel as though you already have it, is turned outward. Feel it now, so the thing will come. The feeling becomes bait, and the house stays the point. It talks about thought more than almost anything else in the culture, and still points everything outside.
And yes, sometimes the thing comes. Spend six months focused on one goal and you notice chances you would have missed, you ask for more, you act more. That moves things in the Physical, and there is nothing mysterious about it. But when the thing arrived, the good feeling came exactly the way the wanting had come: made by Thought, in that moment. The house didn’t deliver it. It couldn’t.
What this is not
This isn’t an argument for wanting nothing. Make plans. Apply for the job. Look for the flat. Wanting a different life is ordinary and fine.
What falls away is everything that was attached to it. Waiting to be okay until it arrives. Checking your belief for leaks. Trying to push thought out into a world of atoms it was never going to move.
It took me a long time to see something this simple. I was very good at building complicated things on top of it.
The vision board faces out, toward the things you don’t have yet and the day you will have them.
Thought was never out there. It is here, making all of it, right now: the house you picture, the longing you feel looking at it, the question afterwards about whether you believed enough.
There is nothing to attract. Everything you will ever experience is made right here, in the moment it is thought. The Law of Attraction was pointing at that all along. It was just facing the other way.
