“But we both see the same tree.”
“If it is all made inside, how do we agree on the traffic light?”
“Something is coming in. You cannot tell me nothing is coming in.”
During an interview with Sam from the Rebel Spirituality podcast, he put the third one to me a week ago, kindly, as the reason most of his listeners get off the bus. They can follow the argument. They can see that the mood is not in the weather and the insult is not in the words. And then they arrive at the tree, and the tree is there for everybody, and the whole thing quietly folds back into common sense.
If that is where you got off, you were not being slow. You were being careful, and the tree is exactly the place a careful person should stop. I stopped there myself, for years.
So this piece is about the tree.
What is granted
The Physical is there. I have no argument with it and never have.
Light leaves the sun, bounces off a tree, and enters your eye. A voice pushes air, the air pushes on your eardrum, and something happens in a small spiral of bone behind it. There is a world of matter, it is indifferent to what anyone believes about it, and it does not wait for permission. Cut yourself on it and it bleeds. Walk into it and it hurts. None of that is up for revision here.
Something is coming in. The question is what.
What the eye can do
The back of your eye is lined with two kinds of cell. One kind picks up color. The other picks up brightness. That is the whole inventory. Not one cell in the human eye is built to pick up a tree.
So run the tree through it. Light arrives from that direction, carrying green and brown at these intensities, and the eye reports green here and brown there and a certain brightness across the patch. That is the entire delivery. Nowhere in green is the word leaf. Nowhere in brown is bark, or oak, or the one I climbed as a child, or shade on a hot day, or this is going to come down in the next storm.
And yet you never once see green and brown. You see a tree. Instantly, without effort, before you could stop it.
You have never seen a tree. You have seen green and brown, and a tree arrived.
Where did the tree come from? Not from the tree. The tree sent color and light and nothing else, because that is all a tree can send and all an eye can take. The tree as a tree, the whole recognized thing, was added. It was made, right there, in the only place anything is ever made, out of what you know and the Principle that turns knowing into seeing.
What the ear can do
The ear is stranger, and I find it the more convincing of the two.
There is no sound in the room you are sitting in. There are pressure waves in the air, varying in how fast they come and how hard they push. That is what leaves a mouth, and that is what reaches an ear. When they get inside, they move a row of microscopic hairs in the cochlea, and the movement of the hairs becomes an electrical signal, and the signal goes up a nerve. At no point on that journey is there a sound. There is pressure, then motion, then electricity.
Sound is what you experience. Nobody has ever measured a sound arriving. They have only ever measured pressure, and then asked the person what they heard.
And the same pressure waves that are a sentence to you are noise to someone who does not speak the language. Same air, same ear, same signal. One person hears I love you and the other hears syllables. The difference was never in the air.
The part that is shared
Now go back to the objection.
Something is shared. Yes. The light is shared. The pressure is shared. You and I standing under the same tree receive very nearly the same green at very nearly the same brightness, and if you say something I receive the same pressure pattern you sent.
Look at what that list is made of. Color, brightness, pressure, amplitude. Now ask whether you have ever, in your life, experienced any of it.
You have not. Nobody has. No one has ever seen a raw patch of green without it already being grass or paint or the light through the leaves. No one has ever heard a pressure wave. By the time anything at all is experienced, it is already a tree, a voice, a sentence, a person, a threat, a gift. And that whole layer, the only layer you have ever lived in, is not what came in.
What is shared is exactly the part nobody has ever experienced.
What is experienced is exactly the part that was never shared.
The objection had the two halves the right way round and did not know it. There is a shared world, and it is made of light and pressure, and you have never been in it.
There is a lived world, and it is made of trees and voices and mornings, and it has never once been shared, because it was generated in you, out of what you already knew, through Thought, and could not have been generated anywhere else.
But we agree
We do. You say tree, I say tree, we both walk around it rather than into it.
Watch how the agreement was built. Neither of us was handed a tree. Each of us, a long time ago, received green and brown and had a tree arrive, and someone nearby said the word, and the word attached itself to the arriving. Two separate events, in two separate places, each producing a private tree and a shared sound for it. We meet at the word. We have never met at the tree.
So it is not the same tree. There are two, one in each of us, and neither of them is made of atoms. The one with atoms in it sent light. The two you and I are looking at are made of Thought, and there has never been any other kind to look at.
A baby is the clearest proof of this, and any parent has watched it happen. The eyes work from the first day. Color and brightness arrive at full quality. And the baby does not see a tree, or a face, or a room, because nothing in the delivery says what any of it is. Then, over months, the trees appear, because something inside had begun to know.
The tree never sent a tree. It could not. Nothing on that side of the eye has a tree to send.
What this is not
I am not saying the tree is not there. I am not saying you can think it away, or that the car in the road is negotiable, or that the Physical is a story. The world of matter is real, it is shared, and you should look both ways. What I am saying is stranger: that the world you live in is not that one. It is the one that arrives after the light and the pressure have done all they can do, and the arriving happens in one place only.
That is not a philosophy of perception. Perception is already the finished product. It is a fact about what an eye is, and what an ear is, and what neither of them has ever been able to carry.
So the next time the tree stops you, and it will, let it.
Stand under it. Notice that green is arriving, and that a tree is already there, whole, with a history and a shade and a name, and that the second thing was never in the first. Notice that every person walking past is doing the same, in private, out of a different life, and that all of you are agreeing about something none of you received.
Nothing came in but light. Everything you have ever seen was made here.

The eye that can only take color and brightness, and the ear that has never once received a sound, came to me through Brett Chitty’s whiteboards. Whatever you saw here, you saw.
One more thing. The book this comes out of is Reality Is an Inside Job, and a short free one sits next to it at insidejob.one. Neither will teach you anything. That is the point of both.
Quick note: RealityOS is the book’s companion, running inside Claude, for the moment the tree stops you in your own situation. It is part of the paid subscription, here.
