“I can’t switch my head off.”
“Why do I keep going over it?”
“If I could just stop thinking about it, I’d be fine.”
A conversation went badly, and days later it is still running. What they meant by that, what you should have said, what it says about you that you didn’t, what happens the next time you see them. Each thought arrives already carrying the next one.
If your mind does this, nothing is wrong with you. It is what thinking does when one particular thing is missing.
That thing is the full stop. And it was never made of thought.
What the full stop is
Underneath every thought there is something that is not a thought. Call it the formless: the quiet that is there before anything is made, and that every experience is made out of.
When you see that what you are experiencing is coming from Thought, in this moment, you are standing in that quiet, whether you notice it or not. And from there, thoughts end on their own. Each one is had, and then it is finished, because nothing is being built on top of it. You don’t stop them. You don’t need to.
That is the full stop. It is automatically there whenever you are living inside-out. Nobody has to put it there, and nobody can.
When it looks as if your experience is coming from outside, the full stop is missing. Not because something has gone wrong with you, but because the quiet underneath has dropped out of view. And without it, every thought becomes the start of the next one.
Every thought is built from the last one
Watch the chain the next time it starts and you can see how it is put together.
The first link is something that has already happened: a remark, a look, a number on a screen. From it comes a thought. From that thought comes another, and from that one another. When experience looks as if it is coming from outside, whatever has already been made is the only material there is. You think about the conversation. Then you think about your thought about the conversation. Then about that.
Every thought in the chain is built out of the one before it.
Nobody can tell you what your next thought will be. But anyone can tell you there will be one. A chain made only of what has already been made has no reason to stop anywhere.
Which is why it was never about the content. You can swap the worried thought for a positive one, reframe it, argue it down, and the chain carries on with new material. The trouble was never what you were thinking about. It was the direction: one thought leading to the next, with nothing underneath it.
Why it feels like it has to be done
There is a reason the chain feels necessary, even responsible.
When an experience looks as if it is coming from out there, it stops looking like an experience. It looks like a fact. Solid, physical, something you now have to deal with. And once it is a fact, of course it has to be thought about. You turn it over and look at it from every side until it is handled.
It never gets handled, because it was never out there. That conversation is being made right now, through Thought, the same way the tree you see is made. You are not processing a fact. You are making one, again and again, and then responding to what you made.
“But some things really need thinking through”
They do. There is a tax return to file, a hard conversation to plan, a diagnosis that comes with decisions in it. The Physical is there, and some of it needs handling.
The difference is not whether you think about it. It is whether the full stop is there while you do.
When it is, you think about the tax return and the thinking comes to an end. Something occurs to you that you didn’t know you knew. You make the call. Then you are free, and the next thought is about whatever is in front of you.
When it isn’t, the same tax return becomes the first link in a chain about money, then about the future, then about what kind of person can’t keep their paperwork in order. Same subject. One version has an end and the other doesn’t.
Why you can’t make it happen
Because the full stop isn’t a thought, no thought can produce it.
“I must stop thinking about this” is one more link in the chain. So is arguing with yourself, distracting yourself, or telling yourself to relax. Even watching your thoughts closely, one by one, can turn into the same thing, the thoughts still treated as facts that need managing.
The end of the thinking was never going to come from more thinking.
What ends the chain is not a better thought about it. It is seeing what every thought is made of. The moment it is seen that the whole chain is Thought, being made right now, it has nothing left to stand on. The thought that was about to become the start of the next one becomes the end of this one.
You have had this a thousand times
The full stop is not somewhere you have to get to. It is in you right now, underneath this sentence, and you have met it more often than you know. The moment in the shower when the problem you had been chewing on for two days went quiet and the answer was simply there. The walk where you forgot what you had been worried about. The evening the chain just ended and you never noticed when.
Nobody did that for you, and you didn’t do it either. It came from the one place wisdom has ever come from, inside you, where it was the whole time. Every fresh thought you have ever had came from there, a thought that wasn’t built out of the one before it. I find that astonishing.
That is what was quietly finishing your sentences all along.
What this is not
It is not a way to get to sleep, and it is not a rule against thinking. You will think about that conversation again. Thinking is how a human life gets made, and a good deal of it is a pleasure.
It is also not a failure when the chain starts. Outside-in comes with being human, and there is no halfway point you are failing to hold. The next moment is always fresh, and the full stop is in every one of them.
So the next time the links start lining up, you might notice what the chain is made of.
Every link is a thought, made just now, out of the last one.
And underneath all of them, ready to end any one of them, is something no thought ever made.

The full stop is Brett Chitty’s phrase, from one of his whiteboards, and it has stayed with me. Whatever you saw here, you saw.

One more thing. The book this comes out of is Reality Is an Inside Job, and a short free one sits next to it at insidejob.one. Both of them end. That turns out to be the point.
Quick note: RealityOS is the book’s companion, running inside Claude, for the nights the chain won’t stop. It is part of the paid subscription, here.
