“Sometimes my feelings come from Thought, and sometimes they come from what happens to me.”
“I’m mostly inside-out these days.”
“I know it’s Thought. I just don’t feel it yet.”
Almost everyone who comes across this understanding ends up saying one of these. They sound modest and honest. Most of it is seen, and a little bit isn’t yet, and that seems like a reasonable place to be.
If that is where you are, nothing has gone wrong. It is exactly what the understanding looks like while one exception is still standing.
But the exception is the whole problem. Halfway inside does not bring you halfway to peace. Peace only comes when it is seen that every feeling you have ever had came from Thought, in the moment it was felt. All of them, with no exceptions. As long as one is left, the outside-in way of seeing has a door, and it will keep coming back in through it.
What “sometimes” does
Look at what happens the moment some feelings are allowed to come from outside.
Every feeling turns into a question. Is this one mine, or did the world do this to me? And as soon as the answer can be “the world”, you are back to managing it. The people, the circumstances, the conditions that would have to be right before you can be okay.
Notice, too, which feelings end up on the outside list. Never the easy ones. The good morning gets credited to Thought. The boss, the diagnosis, the partner’s tone of voice get the exemption. So the exceptions sit exactly where the understanding was needed most.
Peace with exceptions is peace on conditions.
And a condition can always fail. Which is why “sometimes” never quite settles. It keeps you watching.
Why one exception is enough
The whole outside-in way of seeing rests on a single idea: that something out there can make you feel something in here. Leave that idea standing in one place and it does not stay small. If one thing out there can do it, so can the next. The list grows back.
This is why all of it matters, and it is not a high standard you have to live up to. One hundred percent is simply how it works. Thought did not make some of your feelings and leave the rest to the world. It made every one of them, in every moment of your life, including all the moments you filed under “sometimes”.
Seeing that is not a matter of getting more of it right. It is seeing that there was never anything else.
“But I feel both”
The strongest case against this is the one most people are living in. I know perfectly well it’s Thought, and I still feel terrible. Surely that’s both at once.
That sentence mixes up knowing and seeing.
Knowing the principle as an idea is easy. An idea about Thought can sit in an outside-in moment like any other piece of furniture. The Principles themselves can become one more thing to think about, while the world still seems to be coming at you from out there.
And the feeling tells you nothing about which side you are on. A low mood can be had on either side, and so can a good one. You can feel awful and see exactly where the awfulness is being made, and that moment is entirely inside-out. You can feel wonderful because the email finally came, and that moment is entirely outside-in.
So “I feel both” was measuring the wrong thing. It was reading the weather and calling it the address.
Nothing comes with you
When an outside-in moment is seen for what it is, nothing from it comes across. Not the circumstance, not the feeling, not the story about either. You come across, and that is all.
You know this from your own life. The problem you went to bed with is still there in the morning, the facts unchanged, and yet somewhere in between it stopped being the same problem. Nothing about it came with you. It was seen fresh, made in the same place as everything else, and that changed how it was held.
What carries you over is an insight, and an insight brings nothing with it. Which is also why nobody is ever stuck at a percentage. Not even at the far end of a very bad week. However deep into the outside-in someone has gone, they are exactly one thought from the other side, the same distance as anyone else.
What is on the other side
The side you cross to is not a thin strip of correct understanding. It goes down as far as anyone has ever looked. Wisdom is there, and the formless, the before-anything-was-made that every experience comes out of. It is happening inside you, right now, and it was there through every one of the moments you counted as exceptions. Nothing ever had to be delivered from anywhere else. I don’t expect ever to get used to that.
And you cannot keep it. Try holding the formless in your hand. You can’t bank it, you can’t carry it forward from last Tuesday, you can’t build up a stock of it.
Which turns out to be the good news. There is nothing to maintain. No level to defend, no streak to keep alive. It is available in this moment the way it was in the last one, to anyone, at any age, with no qualifications.
You were never forty percent of the way there.
You were always one thought from all of it.
What this is not
One hundred percent does not mean you will never get caught up again. Outside-in comes with being human, and everyone gets caught.
What changes is what is waiting for you when you do. With an exception still standing, getting caught confirms it: see, this one really does come from outside. With no exception left, there is nothing for the old view to settle into. It passes, the way weather passes.
And it is not a new scale either. “How often am I inside-out?” is the same question with a calendar on it. Counting was never what moved anyone.
Next time you hear yourself say sometimes, you might notice what the word is doing.
It is a thought, in this moment, made where all of them are made.
There was never a sometimes. There was only ever Thought, and the moments when that was seen.

The question of a mixed paradigm, and why there is no room in it, came to me through Brett Chitty’s whiteboards. Whatever you saw here, you saw.

One more thing. The book behind all of this is Reality Is an Inside Job, and a short free one sits next to it at insidejob.one. Neither will tell you how far along you are. That was never the question.
Quick note: RealityOS is the book’s companion, running inside Claude, for the moments when “sometimes” comes back. It is part of the paid subscription, here.

You don't have to use the way you feel as a measurement of how much you understand.
Feeling bad doesn't prove that you've failed to understand something. Nor does feeling good prove that you've mastered it.
