There is a morning you know well.
Something is coming that you would rather not do. A room you have to walk into, a call you have to make, a version of yourself you have to be for the next two hours that is steadier than the one currently drinking the coffee. So you do the routine. You remind yourself of the times it went fine. You stand a bit taller. You run the good lines in your head. Maybe you have a phrase you say to yourself, and it helps, and you walk in.
And it holds. For about an hour.
Then it starts to thin, somewhere in the second half of the meeting, and by the time you are back at your desk you are running on fumes and quietly relieved it is over. You did it. You were, more or less, confident. And you are also a little tired in a way that has nothing to do with the work, because the confidence was a thing you were holding up the whole time, and holding something up is work.
I want to talk about that tiredness, because it is the tell. It is telling you something true, and it is not that you need to get better at the routine.
Made things wear out
Here is the thing nobody says about that kind of confidence:
You built it.
And anything you build, you have to maintain, because built things wear out.
That is not a flaw in your technique. It is what manufactured means. The confidence you talked yourself into this morning was assembled, on purpose, out of memories and postures and phrases, and an assembled thing starts coming apart the moment you stop holding it together. So it needs topping up. Before the next meeting, and the one after that, forever, because the source of it was you, deciding to feel a way, and that is a pump you have to keep your hand on.
You have probably suspected this for years. The self-help never quite finished. The confidence never became yours to keep. You would have a good week and think something had finally settled, and then a hard morning would arrive and you would be back at the mirror running the lines. And the story you were told about that is that you need more reps. Keep building. It compounds.
It does not compound. You are bailing a boat. You can get very good at bailing, and the boat is still taking on water, because the technique was never going to fix the thing the technique is for.
The other kind
Now think of someone you have met who had the other kind.
Not the loud kind. You have met the loud kind and you could feel the effort coming off them. I mean the person who was just, quietly, there. Nothing in them was being performed or managed or held up. They said what they saw. They did not seem to be holding anything up, because they were not. When it went well they were pleased and when it went badly they were fine, and none of it looked like work.
That is the other kind of confidence, and the difference between it and yours is not degree. It is not that they built a bigger one than you did.
They did not build theirs at all.
It came from somewhere you have never been able to reach by trying, because trying is manufacturing, and this is the thing manufacturing cannot make. It arrives on its own, from the source, the way a fresh thought arrives while you are doing the dishes and not while you are straining for it. It asks for no practice. There is nothing to maintain, because nothing was assembled. It is just there, the way your pulse is there, and it does not thin out in the second half of the meeting because you were never holding it up in the first place.
I spent a long time trying to build my way to that. You cannot get there from here. The whole activity is the wrong shape for what it is after.
Why yours will never look like theirs
Here is the part that took me longest, and it is the part that finally let me stop copying people.
The sourced kind of confidence does not look the same in any two people. This is where a projector helps, if you followed the first piece in this series: the light comes through, and on the way out it passes through a lens, and the lens is your own particular design. Same source in everyone. A different shape landing in each of us.
So when you watch the quietly steady person and think I want that, and you go home and try to build it, you are trying to build a copy of how it came through their lens. Their calm. Their particular unbothered way of holding a room. And it never fits, and you assume you have failed at confidence, when what has actually happened is subtler and kinder:
You were trying to wear a refraction that was never going to come through your glass.
Yours, when it is sourced rather than built, comes through your design. It might be quiet or it might not. It might not look like confidence at all in the way the magazines draw it. Your own make is not a lesser version of theirs and it is not a problem to sand down. It is the shape the one light takes when it comes through the one lens that is yours. There was never a standard-issue confidence you were failing to reach. There was your own, waiting on the other side of all the manufacturing you were doing on top of it.
What this is not
I have to be careful here, because there is a way to hear all this that turns it straight back into a technique, and that would miss it completely.
I am not telling you to stop building your confidence and instead be authentic, or to get quiet enough that the real kind arrives, or to trust the process until it shows up. Every one of those is one more thing to do, one more pump to keep your hand on, the same manufacturing in a more spiritual coat.
The sourced kind cannot be switched on the way a method can. It is simply what is there once you stop manufacturing, and it was there the whole time, underneath, while the manufacturing sat on top of it like noise.
And it is not only confidence. Put any of them in the sentence and it holds. The love you have to work up versus the love that is simply there. Patience you are gritting your teeth to maintain versus patience that arrives on its own. Resilience as a discipline versus resilience you did not know you had until the thing happened and you were, to your surprise, still standing. Same two kinds, every time. One you assemble and defend. One that comes through, from the source, in your own shape.
I still catch myself doing the routine some mornings, out of old habit, running the lines on the way into the room.
The difference now is that I know what the tiredness afterward was telling me. It was never asking for a stronger routine.
You can put the pump down.
The thing you were trying to manufacture was already there, waiting for you to stop.
