I have sent people articles.
Not often. I try not to be that person. But once or twice I have read something that took the floor out from under me, thought of someone I love who is standing exactly where that piece is pointing, and sent it before I could talk myself out of it.
Then I waited.
What comes back, when anything comes back, is thanks, interesting.
You have almost certainly been on the other end of this too. Somebody who cared about you said the thing, at the right moment, in good faith. You heard the words. You agreed with them, mildly. You put them down and went to make dinner.
And then, years later, someone else said something not very different, or you read a paragraph in a book by a person who has no idea you exist, and the floor moved.
Same words, near enough. Completely different result.
The words were never doing it
This is the part worth slowing down on, because the conclusion most people draw from it is the wrong one.
The usual explanation is timing. You weren’t ready then. You were ready later. There is something in that, but it still keeps the words in the driving seat — as though the sentence were a key that only works in an unlocked door.
Look at what actually happened in the moment it landed, though. Nothing was received. Something became visible — the way a thing you had walked past for years is suddenly obvious and you cannot think how you missed it.
That seeing was yours. It happened in you, out of your own depth, using your own material. The paragraph was where you happened to be standing when it surfaced.
Nothing came across. Nothing has ever come across. Not once in the history of anyone teaching anyone anything about the nature of their own experience.
That sounds like an overstatement. It is the flattest description of what happens that I can give.
Every medium, the same
Once you see it in the one case, the whole idea of transmission goes with it.
The teacher in the room, who you would still credit today. The book you keep buying copies of to give away. The retreat. The podcast you had to pull the car over for. The conversation at the kitchen table with the person who knows you best. And now a machine that never sleeps, has read everything ever written on the subject, and will discuss it with you at three in the morning in whatever words you find easiest.
None of these are the source. They are all occasions.
That is not a ranking, and it is not me being sniffy about any of them. The good teacher and the bad one differ in how well they point — how cleanly, how patiently, how little of themselves they put in the way. They do not differ in whether they transmit, because neither of them does. I have written before about what an AI can and cannot do here, and the honest answer turned out to be the same answer for the human: the pointing can be excellent, and the seeing is still not something anybody hands over.
Which also means the medium matters far less than the industry built on it needs you to believe. If insight arrived through channels, the best channel would win, and the people with the most access to the best teachers would be the clearest people alive. Look around at whether that is what you find.
What this actually gets you
Here is where it stops being a nice idea and starts being useful, because most of us are carrying a specific weight that this puts down.
There is someone you want this for. A partner, a brother, a friend who is suffering in a way you can see the shape of. And you have tried. You have sent the thing, said the thing, waited for the right opening and said it more carefully the second time. Nothing has taken. And underneath the patience there is a small grinding frustration, and underneath that, if you are honest, a sense that you are failing them slightly.
You are not failing. You were attempting a delivery that no one has ever completed.
What happens when that lands is not resignation. It is that you stop recruiting.
And the odd thing — the thing I did not expect — is that conversations get considerably better once you are not trying to get somebody somewhere. They stop having to defend a position, because you have stopped attacking one. The pressure you were putting on it was never the active ingredient anyway. It was just pressure, and they could feel it, and it was mostly what they were responding to.
You can still say what you see. Say it plainly and then leave it alone. What you cannot do is make it land, and you were never able to, including all the times it did land and you thought you had done it.
The uncomfortable half
I write about this for a living, so let me say the obvious thing out loud.
If nothing transmits, what exactly do I think I am doing here.
The answer I have arrived at is that I am making occasions. That is the whole job. I try to put the mechanism down as clearly and as honestly as I can, and then get out of the way of it, and what happens after that has never once been up to me. When somebody writes to tell me an article changed something, the accurate response is not modesty. It is that they did that. Their own depth surfaced something, and my paragraph was the place they were standing when it did.
Getting this wrong is not harmless. A teacher who believes they are the source builds people who need them. A teacher who knows they are an occasion builds people who need them less, which is a strange business model and the only honest one.
It applies to this piece too. If something opens while you read it, that was you. It arrived when it arrived, the way everything fresh does, and no amount of me writing well would have produced it a day earlier.
I still send people things occasionally.
I have just stopped attaching anything to it. It goes, and then it is theirs, and mostly nothing happens, and that was never the measure of whether it was worth sending.
Once in a while somebody looks up from something small and ordinary and sees a thing that was already true.
Nobody gave it to them.

I think all we can ever do is leaving a trail of bread crumbs. It doesn't matter who picks them up, and when. In my experience, there's always someone. And sometimes that might be enough.
