There is a kind of loneliness that has nothing to do with being alone.
It arrives in company. Sometimes in the best company you have. You are with the person who knows you better than anyone, saying the thing as carefully as you know how, and they are nodding, and they mean the nod, and some small exact part of what you meant does not make the crossing.
They have understood a version of you. A close one. A generous one. Not quite the thing itself.
There is a sillier version of this. A song took the top of your head off the first time you heard it, so you play it for someone, and you watch their face while it plays. The song ends. They say it’s nice.
And there is nothing further you can do. You can describe the outside of it for an hour.
Most of us read that gap as a failure. Ours, for not being clearer. Theirs, for not listening harder. The marriage’s, for not having gone deep enough yet. A great deal of a life goes into closing that last inch.
It is not a fault in you, and it is not a fault in the people who love you. It is the plain shape of the thing.
Where all of it was actually happening
The Reality you are living right now is being generated, in full, inside you.
The room and the light in it. The weight of the day you have had. The face across the table and the hundred things you read in that face without deciding to. The meaning of what was just said, and the small drop in your chest when it was said that way rather than another way.
All of it. Not some of it made in here and the rest let in from out there. The whole of it, made, in the one place your life has ever been happening.
I spent years assuming the opposite, and built a great deal on top of the assumption. Nobody ever puts it to you as a claim you could examine, because it does not arrive as a claim. It arrives as the way things obviously are.
And a whole thing has no seam. Nothing gets added to it from somewhere else and nothing leaks out of it. There is no window cut in the wall to the world next door, because there is no wall, because there is nothing on the other side.
No one has ever been inside the life you are living, and you have never once been inside anyone else’s.
So the not-quite-understood was never a near miss. Nothing was traveling toward you and falling short. There were two whole worlds, running at the same time, close enough in feel to be mistaken for one.
Two sealed lives
Read fast, that is the loneliest news anyone ever delivered. Everyone in a private world, calling across to worlds they will never enter. Every warm thing that ever happened between two people quietly demoted to a misunderstanding.
I sat there for months.
Because there was an evening. Everybody has one. Somebody saw you, and said back to you the thing you had never managed to say, and something unclenched in you that had been clenched for years. You have carried that evening ever since. It is one of the reasons you are still here.
That evening happened. Nothing here takes a thing from it.
And there were two of them.
The evening was real. It was never shared.
Yours and theirs, running side by side, each one whole. What you have carried ever since is yours, generated on your side, entire. Theirs was a different evening and you have never seen it.
Nothing failed to cross that night. There was never one evening for anything to cross inside of.
And nothing here asks you to stop reaching for anyone. Keep the evening. Keep the good or the bad about it.
I have spent the past months writing a book about how this works, and this part came clear somewhere in the middle of it.
It read as the coldest thing I had found. I went looking for the flaw in it. It did not have one.
Then it turned over, without the fact moving at all, and what came out the other side is the warmest thing I know.
The loneliness you came in with does get answered. I would rather you found that out than be told it, because being told it is a sentence you nod at and forget.
It would not fit in a chapter in my “Reality Is an Inside Job” book. I tried four times. So it got its own book, and I have made it free.
It is called The Gifts of Separate Realities. Five chapters, complete, not a sample of the real book with the good part taken out. What happens to the argument that keeps restarting. To the exhausting second job of managing how someone else feels. To the past, and its grip. To forgiveness. And at the end, the turn.
They are called gifts for a reason, and the ones in there are a handful off a full tree. I have two dozen written down and I keep finding more, which is most of what I will be writing about for a good while yet.
The gifts are the fruit. The root is the other book, Reality Is an Inside Job, where the whole thing is worked out from the ground up. It comes out on the 15. of September.
Both live at insidejob.one. You are free to leave them where they are.
There is a whole reality being lived in you. There is another one across the table. No one has ever crossed between them, and no one ever will.
That is either the loneliest fact about being a person, or it is the warmest one.
It took me most of a year to find out which.
