I’m not there yet.
I had a glimpse of it and lost it.
I’m closer than I was a year ago.
I’ve seen it. I just haven’t stabilized it.
Four people, at four very different points along the way. One has just started reading. One has been sitting every morning for twenty years. One had the thing happen, on a retreat or in a hospital corridor, and has spent the time since trying to get back. None of these sentences is a fault. It is what looking sounds like from inside, and anyone who has ever looked has said at least one of them.
But read them again, because they all contain the same two words, and neither word is written down.
There. And later.
The one thing a seeker never doubts
A seeker doubts almost everything. The teacher, sooner or later. The method, and whether it is the right one, and whether there is a better one. Whether they are doing it properly. Whether they are the kind of person it works for at all.
There is one thing they never doubt, and it is the thing that makes them a seeker. The distance. That there is a there, and that they are some way off from it.
Everything else in the enterprise rests on that measurement. The stages, the glimpses, the progress, the falling back. All of it is a reading taken off a ruler, and the ruler is the one instrument in the whole kit that nobody has ever thought to check.
The one thing a seeker never doubts is the distance.
So it is worth checking.
Where a distance can exist
Distance is a physical thing. Here and there. Near and far. The road between two towns, the space between your hand and the cup. The Physical is built out of it, and in the Physical a distance is exactly what it seems: something you can be some way along, and cover, and arrive at the end of.
Reality is not made of that.
You can be under a tree in another country at the flick of a thought, and your body has not moved a centimetre. The distance you just crossed was not a distance. It was generated, whole, where you are sitting.
Reality, in the sense I keep using the word, is not the world out there. It is the lived, felt experience of any of it, and that is generated in exactly one place, inside, through Thought, moment by moment, whole.
It has no far end. There is no here-and-there inside a generated experience for you to be part way across. The sense that something is far off is itself being generated, now, in full, in the same place as everything else. The far is one of the things the inside is making.
The same goes for later. Not-yet is a clock coordinate. The clock lives in the Physical and runs at one pace for everyone. The hour you actually live was never delivered by it, which you already know from every waiting room and every evening that went too fast. I’m not there yet borrows the clock’s later and hangs it on something the clock never touched.
Ask how far away Reality is and the question has gone wrong before the first word. It is a perfectly good question in the wrong dimension, like asking how much a Tuesday weighs.
The path has a length. The place it leads to has none.
What the path is made of
Now look at the path itself, because this is where it turns.
Every path has stages. Beginner, intermediate, the dark night, the glimpse, the stabilising, the integration. Every tradition has its own ladder, and the ladders are drawn with care by people who climbed them, and every rung on every one of them is the same two words again. There, in a more advanced form. Later, with a name attached.
A stage system is a ruler laid across a dimension with no length. Which is why a teacher who tells you what stage you are at has, whatever else they have given you, just handed you a distance. I do not say that against teachers. It is what a map does. A map needs somewhere to be far, or there is nothing to draw.
And here is the part that took me longest. The seeker is not a person who has not arrived. The seeker is the shape Reality takes when a there and a later are in the material being generated.
Take the distance out and something else goes with it, quietly, and it is the traveller. There was never a you standing some way down the road. There was a distance, and the distance had a name on it, and the name was yours.
Nobody arrives, because nobody left.
Twenty years of sitting
Someone sits every morning for twenty years, and they change. They are calmer. Kinder, mostly. Less at the mercy of the day than the person who started. You have met this person, and possibly you are this person, and it happened. I am not going to pretend it did not.
And nothing was approached.
Calmer is not nearer, because there is no nearer. What changed is the Reality being generated, here, in the one place it is ever generated, with less of the there-and-later in the feed. The sitting did not close a distance. It went quiet enough that the distance stopped being generated for stretches at a time, and a life with less distance in it feels exactly like what it is.
The practice was never travel. It was quiet, and quiet is not a direction.
Which also answers the glimpse. You saw it and it went. You did not fall back from somewhere. The there-and-later came back into the material, and a Reality with a distance in it was generated again, whole, the way it always is. Nothing was lost. Nothing had been reached. That is not a consolation. It is the geometry, and the geometry is the good news.
Escaping and seeking
There is a sentence I hear from serious practitioners, and it is a good one. Escaping delusion is not escapism. It is moving toward reality.
I sat with that for a long time, years ago, because it is very nearly right, and the nearly is the whole thing.
Escaping was never about direction. Escaping and seeking are the same motion. One faces away from the elsewhere and one faces toward it, and both of them need the elsewhere, or there is no motion to make. The person fleeing the world and the person advancing on reality are standing on the same line, drawn between two points, and the line is the only delusion on offer.
There is nothing to escape from and nowhere to go, and those are not two facts. They are one fact, seen from both ends.
Pain is pain. The Physical is there, and indifferent, and a body that sits for twenty years changes in the Physical in ways a scan would show. None of that is where the distance was.
What this is not
There is a way to hear all this that puts the ruler straight back in your hand.
I am not telling you to stop practicing because you are already there. Already there still has a there in it. It is the same distance measured at zero, which is still a measurement, and the person who has stopped sitting because they are already there is running the same ruler along the same dimension and reading a different number off it.
The sitting can go on. The walks, the retreats, the quiet mornings, all of it. It is simply not travel, and it never was, and the moment that is seen the sitting gets lighter, because it is no longer carrying anyone anywhere.
You will catch yourself measuring again. On a hard morning, or after a good one, the reading comes up on its own. Closer. Further. Not yet.
You might notice, a little sooner than before, that the instrument is pointed at a dimension that has no length in it.
You were never any distance from it. Not close. Not far. The measurement comes out at zero every time it is taken, and it is the only measurement in the whole enterprise that never needed taking at all.
Reality is this. Here, now, whole. Zero distance, zero time, zero space.

One more thing. The book this comes out of is Reality Is an Inside Job, and there is a short free one sitting next to it at insidejob.one. Neither of them will get you any closer. That is rather the point.
RealityOS is the book’s companion, running inside Claude, for the moment the ruler comes out in your own situation. It does not move you anywhere. It shows you the distance being generated, which is the only thing there was to see. It is part of the paid subscription.
